Princess Bloom was rescued from a puppy mill where she survived horrible conditions for the first three years of her life. She came to us named Bloom which we wanted to honor. We also knew she deserved royal treatment; therefore, we now call her Princess.
We thankfully don't know the details of her past, however it's clear that her body still remembers what she survived. When we adopted Princess, she was timid, fearful, and appeared to be shell shocked. She experienced most situations as a threat and neurologically was wired to flee if given the chance. She ran away twice within her first two days of being with us. She trembled and shook. She didn't whine or make any noise at all. She didn't play or smile. She simply existed.
Over time, Princess started to notice feelings of safety and consistency; she slowly began to trust us. She now has the ability to make choices and experience freedom. She has a voice. She speaks up for herself through setting boundaries, seeking safety, and barking. She has made it quite clear to our large Red Lab (Frank) that she is in charge....and he respects that! Over the years she keeps showing us more of her sassy personality, as well as her authentic self.
Bloom when we initially met her
Princess has amazing strength and resilience. Her upbringing was abusive; it lacked love, nurture, care, choices, and safety. We can't erase her history; however it doesn't need to define how she lives and prospers today.
Bloom and Prosper Therapy was named for Princess Bloom in combination with Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you declares The Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Obviously, dog’s memories and their ability to live in the present moment are quite different than humans. I do believe we can learn quite a bit from dogs regarding how to live mindfully in the here and now.
Each person has their own story and unique needs that bring them to consider therapy. Whatever your story happens to be, I hope you will see that through strength, safety, self-compassion, and hope; you may also enjoy plans for a more prosperous future.
